The former St. Jacobs Family Birthing Home Inc. dissolved in 2003 after 20 years of working towards the goal of having the government of Ontario support and recognize the need for free-standing birthing centres.  This was a non-profit, consumer-based association of volunteers who support the concepts of midwifery care and free-standing birthing centres as ways of offering choices to families living in Waterloo Region and the surrounding area during their childbearing years.

There are currently no free-standing birthing centres in Ontario.
